This teach-in session explores how narratives of women’s liberation are repeatedly mobilised to justify imperial war, sanctions and occupation, particularly in Muslim-majority contexts.
Together we will unpack the concept of imperial feminism: how the language of rights, protection and “saving women” has been used historically and in the present to legitimise violence against our communities. Through collective learning and discussion, we will examine the relationship between empire, Islamophobia and the instrumentalisation of colonial-feminism.
